Ride for Life
The 2nd Nello Memorial Century Cycle Challenge July 1st, 2001 raises £17,000 for the FORCE Cancer Support Centre Appeal
Im delighted to report on behalf of Ride for Life that we recently handed over a cheque to FORCE for £17,000. This is money raised from the 2nd Nello Memorial Century Cycle Challenge, the one hundred mile cycle from Topsham to the roof of Exmoor and back on July 1st, 2001.This was the second year the ride has taken place in honour and memory of Nello. Over 150 cyclists took part, and we had more than double than number in the evening for the pasta feast.
The money raised this year has been donated to the FORCE Cancer Support Centre Fund, the major new initiative to create a purpose-built cancer support centre on the grounds of the RD & E. As Meriel Fishwick (herself a Topsham resident) says, This is the biggest leap forward in cancer support ever funded by FORCE for it will allow us to provide an individualised and holistic approach to cancer care.
The ground for this great and important initiative has yet to be broken, but plans have now been approved for an imaginative and sensitively designed centre that will be of real benefit to patients, their carers and families. The FORCE Cancer Support Centre will provide a range of complementary therapies, facilitate support groups, provide information, advice and support in a non-clinical environment, and quite simply enhance patient/carer quality of life. We know, sadly from experience, how important such a centre will be and that is why we are delighted to be able to contribute to this hugely important initiative. However, we are keenly aware too that the appeal has only just begun and much work is yet to be done before this inspirational centre will become reality.
Nello was an inspirational friend and member of the Topsham community, and it is wholly fitting that an event born out of his memory should grow to become such a significant annual feature on the Topsham calendar. If youd like like to join the Ride for Life team or get involved in any way, wed love to hear from you. Please call Marc or Kim on 01392 873778 or email marc@rideforlife.org.uk.
