Nello Ghezzo was born in Rosolina Mare, near Venice, on January 16, 1949 and grew up in the industrial hinterland above Milan near Varese. As a youth, he was a fanatic footballer, and even had the chance to train with the junior squad of the great AC Milan. Later, after military service in the parachutist regiment, he entered the hotel trade (where he continued to play football as a goalie in the keenly competitive Milan hoteliers' league), and came to London where he worked in the Connaught Hotel under the great chef Michel Bourdin. After running his own successful restaurant on the shores of Lake Maggiore, Nello settled in Exeter in 1986, and opened Nello's Ristorante in Topsham in 1989. This year, the restaurant scooped the honours as the number one pizza and pasta restaurant in the country when it landed first prize in an important national award sponsored by Galbani.
